Patient Preferences for Antipsychotic Drug Side Effects: A Discrete Choice Experiment

Abstract Background Development of pharmaceutical interventions for schizophrenia emphasizes clinical efficacy and subsequent effectiveness cost-effectiveness. However, given the many side effects antipsychotic medication, it is important to consider importance different on preferences that people with have drugs. This study aims use a discrete choice experiment elicit patient medication profiles. Method Preferences were investigated using conducted in south London. 297 participants diagnosis who had been receipt anti-psychotic minimum one month included. Participants presented sequence choices involving five (attributes) each four levels. Conditional logit models used determine most (and least) likely be preferred by prescribed antipsychotics. Subgroup analyses explored impact gender, ethnicity, age, symptoms. Results As expected, tended value medications offering least effects, model coefficients expected direction. For whole sample subgroups, memory fatigue whereas palpations mobility important. Conclusions strong preference fatigue. These findings should inform drug development companies prescribing practice clinicians.
